Established in 1898, this classic course was designed by architect John van Kleek with his
design consultant, the celebrated golfer Walter Hagen, resulting in the
quintessential Adirondack course. The course is located on the shores
of Lake Placid, with panoramic lake and mountain views, beautifully carved
out of the forest which extends from the lake to the foothills.
This 18 hole, par 71 course measures 6,490 yards from the back tees, not
long by today's standards, but do not be deceived by mere numbers.
The course, cut out of the forest which extends from the lake to the foothills,
calls for accuracy and penalizes long hitters who lack control. It is
challenging to even the finest players, as shot-making and finesse are
essential skills.
There are two signature holes at the Whiteface Club and Resort, the first
is the sixth hole, a par 5 dogleg left, with majestic Whiteface Mountain
looming in the background. It is a strategically designed hole that unfolds
from an elevated tee, and positioning the tee shot is crucial. Leave your
driver in the bag in favor of a long iron or wood to reach the fairway
below. Two more iron shots to the uphill green should guarantee you par
and perhaps even birdie. This is a hole you will want to play more than
once as the more you play it, the more it reveals.
The second memorable hole is the par 3 fourteenth measuring 218 yards.
It is considered one of the finest and toughest par 3s in the Adirondacks.
It requires a fearless drive or long iron to clear a pond and escape the
trees lining both sides of the fairway. The strike must also avoid large
bunkers that guard the tiered green which is reminiscent of a Roman amphitheater.
A par here is to be cherished!
