Lake Placid Resort
founded in 1895 by Melvil Dewey. The Club grew into a resort
of some 1,200 acres by the early 1900s and could easily accommodate 1,000
guests. There are two 18-hole courses and an executive 9-hole course,
the 45 holes providing a variety of golf not often matched by other resorts.
The resort was purchased in 1996 by the Serge Lussi Family of Lake Placid
and since then many exciting improvements have been made including a new
club house, state-of-the-art irrigation, bunkers reconstructed, tees mounded
and additional length added to the fairways.
The Links or Lower Course was designed in 1909 by Seymour Dunn, a Scotsman
and very important figure in golf history. Dunn, was also the architect,
club maker, teacher, author and director of the Lake Placid Club for
21 years.
The Mountain Course was originally designed in 1901 by Alex Findlay of
Scotland. In 1929 Alistair Mackenzie, another Scotsman, whose philosophy
was Good golf promotes good health, remodeled a few of the
holes on the course. Originally a physician, Mackenzie abandoned medicine
and spent the remainder of his life designing and remodeling courses throughout
the world including Augusta National and Cypress Point.
